V-ACCESS Achievements | −36% CO₂ Reduction
Within the V-ACCESS project, a key milestone demonstrates the potential of hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) for maritime decarbonisation.
A full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), carried out by RSE and Politecnico di Milano, shows that a stern trawler can achieve up to −36% reduction in operational CO₂ emissions compared to a battery-only baseline, depending on mission profiles (harbour, coastal, offshore).
An electric ferry records a −1.1% reduction, highlighting how the impact varies depending on vessel type and operational profile.
The assessment covers both the manufacturing carbon footprint and long-term operational emissions, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental benefits.
