V-ACCESS Achievements | Real-Time HESS Simulation

Within the V-ACCESS project, a key milestone marks the successful real-time validation of the Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) through Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) simulation.

Conducted at the ShIL laboratory of the University of Genoa, the simulation integrates five key components simultaneously:

  • battery ESS (BESS)
  • supercapacitor ESS (SCESS)
  • SMES ESS (SMESS)
  • bidirectional DC/DC converters
  • dynamic vessel load profiles

The system was implemented on the OPAL-RT OP4512 platform (210 ns time step) with Imperix B-Box RCP 3.0, ensuring high-fidelity real-time performance.

✅ Simulation results are consistent with manufacturer data from SKT and ASG, validating HESS control strategies ahead of physical testing.

👉 This milestone represents a crucial step toward system integration and real-world deployment.
