V-ACCESS Achievements | Regulatory Gap Analysis

Within the V-ACCESS project, a key milestone highlights the outcomes of a comprehensive rules gap analysis for the integration of hybrid energy storage systems in maritime applications.

The study identifies more than 8 regulatory gaps affecting the deployment of supercapacitors and SMES in onboard power systems, as reported in Deliverable D5.4.

By benchmarking existing battery standards (IEC, RINA, DNV, ABS) against the specific requirements of novel energy storage technologies, the analysis reveals critical gaps in areas such as:

• thermal management
• electromagnetic compatibility
• dynamic response requirements

👉 These findings have been shared with classification societies, contributing to the development of future regulatory frameworks and enabling the safe and effective adoption of HESS in the shipping sector.
